Spokes are by far the most important structural component of the bicycle wheel, and can vary in length by the tenth of a millimeter. In fact, the smallest mistake in spoke length selection can severely shorten a wheel's lifespan, or worse: lead to disastrous material failure.

Spoke manufacturers generally cut spokes in even increments (every 2mm), which makes it impossible to build a proper wheel without having your spokes precisely cut and threaded to perfection. Bulk spoke manufacturing also decreases the quality of spoke threads, which can lead to similar wheel lifespan issues and performance loss.
